Cathedral choirs confidently sing,
joyous brass, church bells ring,
holy hymnal hope proclaimed:
search for stable, gospel-famed.
Hungry hearts seek sacred sign,
candle glow, ingested wine
strong the eagle, wingspan wide,
organ pipes swell with pride.
Pagan tree, bauble-hung,
hallowed all hosannas sung,
red the berry, serrated leaf,
plum pudding, spiced beef.
Festive food, add extra chairs,
presents wrapped, extra care,
travel by train, plane and car
kith and kin from places far.
What your hope this advent time?
Tell me yours, I’ll tell you mine:
grip the book, recite the verse,
neutered Eden’s serpent curse.
